Students … Develop your career in
journalism with guidance and support from the Columbus Association of
Black Journalists. Annual Workshop Each year, applications are mailed to middle and high schools in the Central Ohio area to recruit minority students who might be interested in learning about careers in media-related fields. Publicity on radio,
television and in area newspapers is also used to attract participants for
the program. Students are chosen for the workshop based on their
interest in journalism and mass communication, along with an essay, reference
letters from school counselors or teachers, and a completed application. In cooperation with
volunteers from area television, radio and newspaper industries, the workshop
includes six areas: news writing, public relations, radio, television,
graphic arts, and video. All workshop instructors are CABJ members and area
media professionals who donate their time. The media plays an
important role in shaping perceptions and images. Three-fourths
of most newspapers have no people of color as reporters, editors, or
managers. CABJ seeks to develop more Black talent and show students the wide
range of opportunities that exist in journalism. Media Sampler While every facet of journalism
and mass media cannot be covered in this workshop, the program offers young
talented students a sample of opportunities that exists. No Cost to Students Selected Students receive free textbooks and all related materials, US Savings Bonds, certificates of completion and solid mentoring relationships that continue long after the workshop's official end. |
Influencing our community: From radio to television to print, African-American media
professionals have had a voice in shaping our changing world as we set a
precedent for excellence and greatness. Through communication, we have the
opportunity to influence our young, create growth in our communities, and
challenge society to an even higher standard of morals and values.
